4 Stars Simply Clean does what I want it to do
I was actually a little worried about getting this litter pan, but thought I would give it a shot. In the past, I’ve owned the Littermaid and liked it too, but my cat tends to go to the bathroom in the same area of the litter pan. This caused a problem with the rake system that the littermaid had. When I received the Petsafe Simply Clean, I was worried because it didn’t look like there was a whole lot of room for the cat to go. But, he took to it just fine and didn’t have any problem with rotation that others talk about scaring their cat. As others reviews have stated, the breaking up of the “poop” clumps does happen. So I added more litter and it stopped. It seems to only happen when the litter is lower in the pan. I’ve used Tidy Cat and Walmart Special Kitty brand litter and both work the same. I do wish the sides were a little taller. Litter does get out, but my cat is a crazy digger and always happens no matter what litter pan I have. I’m hoping that since there is no rake system, this will last longer. So far, I am happy with the Simply Clean litter pan. It sure does beat scooping by hand.

1 Star Another automatic litterbox that won’t work!
This is the second automatic litter box that I have tried, and it is no good either, so I think I am going back to the good old scoop-it-yourself method. I tried the Littermaid Elite first, the rake kept getting stuck to the point that the rolling joint on the rake broke (twice!). Here is the list of problems I had with the Petsafe litterbox:

I will start with the general problems and then the functional flaws:

1.) For the average house-cat the PetSafe box is just too small. Half the space inside the rotating container is blocked by the “poop-escalator” and it’s cover and the remaining circular space that is left is way too small and very awkward for a cat. The obvious result is, lots of litter piles up quickly outside the box.

2.) The “poop-escalator” only picks up the large chunks, any chunks smaller than – let’s say a peanut M&M – won’t get picked up and keeps circling and will obviously start to smell. So you basically will have to manually remove those on a daily basis.

3.) There is always a great risk that the crank that runs the “poop-escalator” winds up the plastic liner bag in the disposal bucket, as it is not shielded. If you don’t catch this fast enough, the motor will overheat, stall and die (fire hazard?). This was my first replacement part I had to order after only one month.

4.) After about 2 months the power supply died for no obvious reason. I tried to find a generic one, googled it everywhere but no luck. Came to find out the box requires a special low-amp transformer that is proprietary and you have to purchase it from Petsafe. Replacement part #2! Most people would have thrown the PetSafe box away by now.

5.) After 4 months, the fuse inside the box blew. Maybe caused by power surges we’ve had due to bad weather & lightning, I’m not sure, but any robust electrical design should be able to compensate for that. There is no replacement part for this, so I had to open up the litter box, and solder in a new fuse myself. Again, most people would not have gone that far and probably chunked the box.

6.) Finally yesterday, I heard an awful rattling noise. I checked the box, this time the poop-escalator’s comb that is attached to the crank got stuck on the stationary part of comb. Again, this caused he motor to overheat, but I caught it just in time before it died again. I’m not sure what caused the comb to get stuck, I wiggled it and it seems to work again after that, but to me it’s just another sign of the PetSafe box being a very flawed and troublesome design.

Not worth your money in my opinion!

5 Stars LOVE IT!!!
We have wanted a auto litter for a long time. But the alternatives were very pricey and used containers you had to replace. This one not only uses recycled plastic bags but is also not expensive. Im horrible when it comes to cleaning my litter out with twin newborns etc. Enough was enough and we decided to try this. The pet shop had said he had not had any bad feedback…but thats because he hadnt heard any feedback. But the price was right so why not. Let me tell you….I LOVE IT! My cat had no problem taking to it. Its so quiet that i couldnt even figure out how it worked. We just decided that its Magical! Yes sure ….little pieces of poo fall through….WHO CARES! Compared to being packed with clumps and having to scoop. Ill take that any day. Just trust me. Its great. Im very picky and i NEVER write reviews.

4 Stars Great upgrade from scooping.
I’ve only had this for a week (ordered Wednesday, delivered Friday w/ free super saver…awesome job amazon!), but both my cats have taken to it. One of my cats makes a huge mess, but thats not this box’s fault. I just got them a mat that keeps things tidy. I’ve not had a chance to try many different litters to see which is the best, but I started with Everclean Premium, and it works well, but the urine clumps tend to get broken up and spread around instead of picked up. This isn’t a big problem, and it doesn’t do it enough for me to think I need to do something different, but I will try a different litter. If anyone using this box has found a litter that works very well please leave a note in you comments so we can try it.

4 Stars love it, wish my cat did!
My cat used to be an outside cat and just recently started using a litter box (2 yrs). After 2 yrs of a regular litter box I was ready to try something better. This system is amazing! It cleans continuously with little or no smell and uses plastic grocery bags. Plus, it is low cost. The problem is that my cat is afraid of it because of the movement of the tray. The area where the cat goes is also a little on the small side. I would suggest keeping it unplugged until the cat gets used to it or on a timer. I wish I did.
